The results for China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) and China Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CGMCM) in 2009 were released. The number of first prizes and the total prizes of NUDT ranked No.1 among all the national universities, among which four first prizes and six second prizes were won by the undergraduate contestants and three first prizes, 17 second prizes and nine third prizes were won by the graduate contestants of our university.

The CUMCM of 2009 was held from September 11th to 14th. A total of 45,000 contestants came from 1,130 colleges and universities of 33 provinces, autonomous regions and Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (Macao and Tibet’s colleges and universities are the first time entrants). Compared with last year, the number of undergraduate teams and junior college student teams gained an increase of 18% and 12% respectively. 109 teams of our university participated in this contest.

The Sixth China Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CGMCM) was in progress from September 18th to 22nd. In total, contestants of 1662 teams from 213 colleges, universities and institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences of 28 provinces and autonomous regions participated in the contest, among which, more than 300 contestants were PhD candidates. The attending institutes cover most of the “985 Program” and “211 Program” universities. NUDT sent 165 students (including 45 PhD candidates and 120 master candidates) which constitute 55 teams to this contest.

The Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling was first held in USA in 1985 and all the testing questions derive from the practical problems. In this contest, all the teams are required to write papers, state problems, propose hypotheses, construct and test the models, analyze the results and discuss the merits and demerits of the models within three days. In China, the Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling was first held in 1992, and it has become one of the four important disciplinary contests organized by the Ministry of Education. Currently, it is a basic disciplinary contest which covers the largest numbers of colleges and universities in China and it also exerts important influence both at home and abroad.

The mathematical contest in modeling not only fully promoted the students’ ability of analyzing and solving practical problems with mathematical theory and methodology, but also stimulated their creativity and enhanced their team-work spirit. This contest has become an important platform for improving the students’ ability and creativity in NUDT. Since our first participation in CUMCM in 1993, we have won 44 first prizes, 81 second prizes. As for the CGMCM which was first held in 2004, we have won 19 first prizes, 43 second prizes and 36 third prizes. This great success could not be accomplished without the hard work and devotion of the faculty members from College of Science who tried their best to coach and guide our contestants.
